Why negotiation matters
Your starting salary sets the baseline for every raise, bonus, and future offer. Accepting the first number without a word can cost you lakhs over a decade.

Step 1 - Research the market rate
Use platforms like Glassdoor, AmbitionBox, and LinkedIn Salary to find the range for your role, city, and experience level. Aim for the 60th-70th percentile as your target.

Step 2 - Wait for the offer, then pause
When the number arrives, do not respond immediately. Say: "Thank you so much, could I have a day to review the full offer?" This is always acceptable.

Step 3 - Make your counter
State your number with confidence: "Based on my research and skills, I was expecting something closer to X. Is there flexibility there?" Then stay silent and let them respond.

Step 4 - Negotiate beyond salary
If the base is fixed, ask about joining bonus, extra leave, remote days, or an early review at 6 months. These are often easier to give.

Bottom line: The worst they can say is no. But most of the time, they will meet you halfway.
